A backyard pool is a beautiful, wonderful place to relax and enjoy your hard-earned leisure hours. However, what do you do when your pool begins to look old, faded and flakey? Most plaster finishes last seven years or more, depending on how well they have been installed and maintained, so if your pool is over seven years old, you might want to inspect it to make sure that everything is still in good shape. Slapping plaster over the cracks and flakes is really not a useful thing to do, as this is a temporary fix that will quickly deteriorate. Before beginning a replastering job, the area has to be prepared, either by you or by a reputable contractor. Often, not only the plastering needs to be done, but also the coping and tile installation must be considered as a part of the job.

In order to plaster your swimming pool, it is necessary to have some specialized equipment such as a concrete mixer; an outlet with 30 amps and 240 volts, tile; plaster and concrete tools; a hand truck and a platform hand truck; a large air compressor; a pneumatic chisel; a pneumatic angle grinder; a diamond tip saw and diamond polishing discs. Since professionals will charge about seven thousand dollars just to take care of the plaster of a pool, it might be cost effective to purchase these tools and do the job yourself. Many of these tools will only be necessary if you decide to do a total overhaul of your pool, including coping and tiles.

Before any work can be done on your pool at all, it will have to be drained and the pool equipment will have to be carefully stored. This pool equipment includes the filter, the pump, the controllers and the heater.

All the old plaster will have to be removed. Before you begin the new plastering job, you will have a large variety of colors to choose from. As you make this important decision, you need to be aware that you will be looking at the plaster through a covering of water. The depth of your pool will also have a major effect on the color you see.

Once the old plaster has been removed, the area must be acid-washed to ensure the removal of loose surface material, algae, and stains. This will also etch the surface in order to provide a ‘new’ surface that will bond well with the new plaster. Once the new plaster has been installed, it will need to be cured before you return the pool equipment to its proper places.
